Flavia beat Amelie Mauresmo 6-3 6-0
Q.
This is the farthest you've ever gone in a Grand Slam.
FLAVIA PENNETTA: Yeah, it was the first time for the quarterfinal.
Q. How have you gotten here? What's been good for you?
FLAVIA PENNETTA: Well, of course I'm very happy about this tournament.
In the beginning, I never think to get in the quarterfinal and to have
this chance.
I didn't start a good tournament, because the first match was very tough
for me. I didn't play my best tennis. But I just try to fight every
point and keep going.
Q. Why would you say that you wouldn't expect quarterfinals when you've
played very well this summer?
FLAVIA PENNETTA: Because when I arrive here I was very tired from
Beijing. When you're feeling like not good in the court and not good in
my legs, I was very tired, maybe also in my mind, you know.
Also, because in Beijing, we lost very good chance in doubles and for me
it was very important. I don't -- I just was tired.
Q. So you were disappointed?
FLAVIA PENNETTA: Yeah, really.
Q. So how long did it take you mentally to get back to your best?
FLAVIA PENNETTA: Well, I think one week, because I play also in New
Haven. And I won first match singles and doubles there, but the day
after I was completely, like, died. I think one week.
Q. So now your experienced and knowing how to go into these tournaments
has become very important to you?
FLAVIA PENNETTA: Yeah, for sure. It's my first big tournament,
quarterfinal, so I already have few chance in Wimbledon and Roland
Garros. I didn't make it. To be here today, it's unbelievable. But I
hope it's not finish.
Q. So what will you do differently against Dinara?
FLAVIA PENNETTA: I really don't know in this moment. Really, if you ask
me it's going to be the match against Dinara, I going tell you it's
going to be tough for sure.
She's a good player and she's in good shape. For sure, I have to play my
best tennis to beat her. In this moment I just want to enjoy. Tomorrow
we don't play, so I have one day off and just prepare for this match.
Q. How did you cope with the wind? Amélie was clearly having trouble on
her serve.
FLAVIA PENNETTA: Yeah, me too. It was tough. It was very tough, because
-- in the morning it was pretty good, and I practice in that court and
there of no wind at all, so it was normal.
Then we get in the court and it was like too much. I just tried to be
focused and just put my first serve in, and I didn't make it a lot, so
it was very tough for both of us to serve.
She make a lot of mistake today. So for sure she doesn't play her best
match or best tennis.
Anyway, I think I was very focused on my game, and that's why I won.
Q. Can you just talk a little bit about your decision this year to
really make a big push and to commit to your tennis?
FLAVIA PENNETTA: What decision? I just work a lot. It's not a big
decision. You know, when you spend so much time on the court and in gym
with your coach and fitness coach.
I think the work, when you're working a lot always a good result come.
You don't know when. You just have to stay there every time and just be
ready because it's coming.
Q. But confidence is an important part of winning, also.
FLAVIA PENNETTA: Yeah, last year was a very tough year for me. I won
like just in the end of the year. So we work too much during the
November, December, and then from January starting again.
I think I never play like very, very good tennis. Just maybe in Los
Angeles, few matches, and Roland Garros, but most of them I just fight a
lot and just try to stay there.
Q. These last two matches you played, you played very consistent, but
against Dinara, maybe you'll have to push her a little more.
FLAVIA PENNETTA: Yes, for sure. I think she's in good shape. She won two
tournament, one final, here in quarterfinal.
So I have to serve -- my first serve is also going to be important, and
also, the return. In this moment I don't want to think about that.
Q. Time to celebrate?
FLAVIA PENNETTA: No, not yet. When the tournament is finished. It's not
finished. |
